Windows Home Server

» Posted March 9, 2008

Very simple and yet powerful server for your home network.  Microsoft really did this one right.  I'm running an HP MediaSmart ex470, which I've upgraded to 2Gb RAM (from 512MB Stock) and with 3 additional 500GB HDDs for a total of 2 Tb of storage.  Individual secure network folders for each user, shared network folders for music, movies, pictures, etc. AUTOMATIC nightly backups, and the ability to log in from any computer, from anywhere in the world, and view your shared media... and even operate your home computers remotely!  Very simple, yet powerful server solution for the home! See all my computer stuff here!

VTX is back from the Repair Shop

» Posted Dec 25, 2005

After my recent accident, the X was in the shop for ~ 5 weeks.  Finally got it back on Dec 23.  I've only been able to ride it a few miles since then, but it's great to be back!  New additions to the VTX are the Vance & Hines exhaust and the PowerCommander III.  Here is a pic and here are a few videos that show off the sound!

Great page for everything VTX 1800F.  Starting with Specifications and Accessories, I also want to add links to Maintenance, Wish List, Resources for 'F' Model Accessories, etc.

New Job and Mobile Phone: PalmOne Treo 650

» Posted Sept 8, 2005

Started new job last week.  Meant I needed to get a new mobile phone.  Tried four phones in one week before deciding on the Treo 650.  Lots of great features including BlueTooth, Palm OS for syncing to both my home and work PCs, wireless internet - including the ability to access my POP3 e-mail account on the road, MP3 player, and much more!

See them here!  Love the look of these:

Add-ons to Office PC

» Posted October 22, 2003

Lots of changes to my Office PC.  Two weeks ago my HDD crashed and I lost all of 2003 data!  Decided I need to do better / more frequent backups.  Started with new Western Digital SATA Raptor Hard Drive.  Spins at 10,000rpm and has 8mb cache.  Then added Sony DRU-510A multi-format DVD±RW drive for writing DVDs - including being able to do a complete Clean OS backup and also to do routine data backups..

New Monitor

» Posted Feb 16, 2003

My old Viewsonic 19" died a few months ago.  Since then, I've been using the kids 17" monitor in my office.  Today, I purchased the Viewsonic A90f+ 19" monitor.  It is the first "Flat Screen" CRT that I've purchased, and I took some risk in that I did not specifically research this monitor very carefully.  So far, I'm very pleased.  The text is not as clear as I would have hoped, but a monitor this big really helps minimize the eye strain.  Good brightness.  This monitor is Black and Silver, so it goes very well with my Logitec Cordless Mouse/Keyboard combo, my Klipsch speakers, and my black PC case.  Here is everything together.

New Wireless Keyboard / Mouse Combo

» Posted December 14, 2002

Needed a new keyboard / mouse at work.  I really liked the Logitech wireless keyboard / mouse combination that I've used at home for the last year or so.  I decided I'll take that one into work and bought the new Logitech Elite Duo Wireless Keyboard / Mouse combination for home.  Here is an image of the new setup.

New Scanner

» Posted November 24, 2002

Last night I replaced my Microtek Scanner.  It had worked well since I bought it in April of this year, but stopped working earlier this month.  I had the extended warranty at Best Buy, so replaced and upgraded to the new Canon CanoScan 5000F.  So far, so good.  All of my scanners have had a very poor history of reliability - this is my 4th scanner in the last 6 years or so.

MSN Components Added

» Posted November 1, 2002

Today, I added several new components to the site:

1) Local weather for Modesto, California, where I live (care of MSNBC - bottom left of this page).

2) MSNBC headline news (bottom left of this page).

3) A Stock Quote Applet (top right of this home page).

4) Table of Contents

5) Section on teaching - upgraded to include information on upcoming courses and course information (still in progress)

6) Added the Marquee across the top of this home page with information on my Tacoma

7) New web site heading: replaced graphic text with true-type font - less jaggies.

Feedback Page Added

» Posted October 31, 2002

Today, I added a feedback page which you can reach by using the CONTACT ME link at the left.  I can check for feedback from anywhere with a PC connected to the web.

Added PC Links and Misc. Edits

» Posted October 28, 2002

When I built my last PC in late 2001, I found a number of very good sources on the web for purchasing gear.  Especially noteworthy is Newegg.  They have great prices and selection.  I will also be adding links to good sites for information on building your own.  By the way, if you would like to build your own, my favorite hard-copy magazine for PC enthusiasts is MaximumPC.  Interestingly, their web site sucks, but the hardcopy magazine is very good.

Official Site Launch

» Posted October 26, 2002

Today marks the official launch of my site.  I'm still working on the site, so please excuse any incomplete sections.  You will find information on my new Toyota Tacoma pickup and my homebuilt computers as well as information on my other hobbies and interests.
